SUSTAIN project organized interactive workshops during the final event.

CircHive joined SUSTAIN Final Event 21st January 2026 in Brussels. SUSTAIN project has been coordinated by Capitals Coalition. The main aim of the event was to share the learnings and outcomes from SUSTAIN project to businesses, financial institutions, regulators, NGOs, consultants, and academia. The event provided also excellent opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing and learning from other stakeholders.

Before learning how SUSTAIN tools can be used to stay ahead in nature performance, insights were given by the panelist why SUSTAIN tools are needed. The following organizations joined the panel discussion: Holchim (business perspective), TNFD (sustainability reporting), Storebrand (asset management), BNP Paribas Asset Management, and European Commission (finance and investment). Panelists shared insights on nature-related risks and opportunities, emphasizing that understanding an organization’s dependencies and impacts on nature is critical. Data availability was one of the key issues discussed. Thomas Verheye from European Commission talked about EC’s open data efforts and mentioned that EC is planning to open input-output database for SMEs (less than 250 employers).

The two main outcomes from SUSTAIN project are ENCORE tool and the Nature Tool Compass.

ENCORE (Exploring Natural Capital Opportunities, Risks, and Exposure) tool (https://www.encorenature.org/en) can be used by businesses, financial institutions and regulators to explore the nature-related dependencies and impacts across different sectors. ENCORE tool has also been used in CircHive piloting both in business and finance context. ENCORE tool is especially useful for a materiality assessment to get an overview of the dependencies and impacts on nature.

The Nature Tools Compass (https://resources.unep-wcmc.org/products/WCMC_DT010) provides an overview of over 70 tools that businesses, financial institutions and regulators can use when assessing their nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. The tools included have either global or multi-regional geographical coverage and offer some form of free-of-charge access. Each tool is mapped to the relevant phase of the Locate, Evaluate, Assess and Prepare (LEAP) approach developed by TNFD. CircHive project is planning to look more carefully the Nature Tools Compass when we reach the phase of implementation of pilot results with the CircHive case study partners.
